6 New Instagram Updates

Here’s what you need to know about them!

1. Hello Full-screen, goodbye square images

Instagram is now showcasing full-screen imagery, moving away from square crops and towards portrait images which have a 4:5 aspect ratio.

The preview on your grid will be a square crop from the center of your image. So while you will want to start showcasing those portrait shots, you’ll want to keep the focus of your main object at the center of the frame. This goes for Reels, too.

2. New messaging features

Instagram has added several features to their DM’s that are going to save you a few clicks, and allow you to chat easier without disrupting your scroll time.

  1. Reply while you browse: If you receive a DM while browsing your feed, you can reply without going to your inbox and losing your place.
  2. Quick send: Tap and hold the share button on a post to send to your closest friends. Instagram auto-populates this with friends you engage with most.
  3. See who’s online: You can now check out your friends and see who’s online to chat with (if they have their status turned on).
  4. Sharing song previews: Share 30-second song previews to friends! They can listen directly to their DM’s.
  5. Quiet Messaging: Scrolling on your phone late at night, or don’t want to bother a friend when they’re busy? Add “@silent” in your message – it will send the message without sending the recipient a notification.
  6. Chat themes: Instagram has added new chat themes to their menu including the new lo-fi look.
  7. DM polling: Thank you Instagram for adapting one of our favourite Facebook Messenger features: polling! Now you can create polls in your group chat to survey friends on where to go for dinner this weekend.

3. New Font

Instagram has mixed things up with the launch of a new typeface: Instagram Sans. You can now use this font in your text on Instagram Stories and Reels, and we must admit, it’s our new favourite!

4. recommended posts in-feed

Up until recently, the only content that showed up on your feed was from those you follow.

Instagram has adopted TikTok’s “for you” feature and you’ll now see recommended content pop up in your feed, similar to content you engage with.

You can also choose to filter posts in your feed by your favourites. To do this, tap “Instagram” and select “Favourites”. Don’t forget to add your favourite accounts to this selection and update it regularly.

5. Auto-Generated Captions

A whopping 1/3 of Instagram videos are played with the sound off, so time to turn those captions on!

This spring, Instagram introduced auto-generated captions on Instagram Videos.

Unlike Reels and Stories, where captions are added via a sticker, when uploading a long-form video captions will be created automatically and can be turned on and off in the “advanced options” of each post.

While you have the opportunity to review captions for Reels, you do not (yet) have the same option for Instagram Videos.

If you forget to turn on captions for your video, you can hop into edit and turn them on after it’s posted!

6. Amber alerts to help find missing children

If an AMBER Alert is activated by law enforcement in your area, the alert will now appear in your Instagram feed.

Instagram will use the city you list on your profile, your IP address and location services (if you have it turned on) to know who to send these alerts to.
