TikTok has over one billion users worldwide ‒ that’s a lot of content to break through!
The good news is, that also means there are a lot of potential viewers for your content. But making creative videos is just one step in building a successful presence on the platform.
We sat down with Melua Chance, Partner Manager for Creators in the Lifestyle & Education space at TikTok, to get the inside scoop on how to get your content noticed.
What does the Partner Manager for Creators do?
Melua works alongside some of the most talented creators on TikTok, supporting their growth and understanding of the platform and helping them achieve their personal and content goals.
Here’s what she had to say!
Melua, what tips would you give to someone just getting started on TikTok?
There are tons of tools for creators who are looking to start their journey. For instance, the Creator Portal is an educational resource that supports you as you get going – from learning the basics and finding your community to developing a content strategy and leveraging features. It is also updated often and caters to a wide variety of creators.
Do you see a difference in performance for videos using in-app audio versus original audio?
TikTok is very much a sound ON platform and the right sound can take a video from good to great. I wouldn’t say that the difference comes from one vs the other but rather in how it compliments the content itself. Sound is a great way to join trends and add flavour to your content. Creators shouldn’t just take advantage of the Sounds Page and our playlists for inspiration as they develop their content, but utilize features such as voiceover to further make their videos stand out.
What is the best way to find trending audio and hashtags on TikTok?
Spending time on the FYP is one the best places to start discovering trends on TikTok. Additionally, the search icon at the top right of any video page allows people to search for videos, other creators, sounds, hashtags, and effects.
Are hashtags really that important?
Using hashtags that are relevant to the content you are creating is key to getting the results you are looking for and increases the likelihood of your video being discovered by the right audience.
How can an influencer maximize the performance of their branded partnership content?
Creators should first choose opportunities that make sense for the content they create and the community they have grown- maintaining that authenticity is so important. From there they are the experts and should not be afraid to share ideas with the brands they are working with that would make the concept better and appeal to the audience while also fitting their content style.
How often do you recommend someone posting TikTok to grow their platform?
We recommend that creators focus on the quality of the videos posted vs just creating to have more videos. Essentially, more is more if more is GOOD.
What is your top tip for getting your content noticed?
It’s a great start when a creator knows and is really clear about what they want to share with the audience, be that a talent, skill or unique story. That makes it easier to then make a plan for what you want your videos to accomplish, e.g., do you want to teach something or do you want to make people laugh?
Understanding the community that you hope to reach, what content is currently being created in that part of TikTok and how can you add your own twist to it. This will help you in understanding what trends are popular and relevant so that you reach the right audience. I would definitely encourage any creator to also pay attention to their analytics, the insights on a video can really help them understand how a video is performing and assist in supporting their content strategy.
What are your favourite in-app features on TikTok?
I’m really enjoying how creators have been leveraging stories, the posts are more freeform and spontaneous. It feels like a behind-the-scenes look into what creators are into outside of what they normally post and are known for.
Lastly, do you have a favourite TikTok account?
It’s very hard to pick favourites, there are so many fantastic creators across the platform. My FYP has been prioritizing meditative content lately, which I always appreciate.
