Is TikTok the new YouTube?
Sorry Google, there’s a new kid on the internet!
As more users turn to TikTok to search for content, it’s time to learn how SEO can help you increase your reach.
First things first, what is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s what YouTube and Google use to decide what results you’ll see when you search for something.
When you search for a term, like “how to cook broccoli,” Google considers four factors to decide what content to show you, and how to rank the results:
- Keywords
- If the source is popular and reliable
- Relevance
- When it was published
The same applies to YouTube, however they also consider the accounts you subscribe to, and what content you interact with.
How is TikTok SEO different from Google?
Before you can understand how TikTok’s SEO works, first you need to know how their algorithm works.
Prepare yourself, the tea is about to be spilled!
TikTok prides themselves on giving every creator an equal chance. This means, good content comes first, regardless of who’s posting it. It’s also why follower count is not factored into their ranking, and they try not to show you two videos in a row with the same sound or by the same creator.
TikTok recommends videos based on:
- User interactions (likes, shares, accounts you follow, comments you post, and content you create).
- Video information (captions, sounds, and hashtags).
- Devices and account settings (like your language preference, country setting, and device type. Though, these settings are factored lowest on the scale).
When Google takes into account what content to show you, they don’t consider your user interactions, or sounds in a video. They rely strictly on written keywords.
Here is how TikTok SEO differs from Google:
- TikTok considers text and audio in their search results.
- Accounts that follow you and engage in your content are more likely to see your content over other creators when both appear in a search.
Here is how to incorporate SEO in TikTok…
TikTok is an audio-visual app, so their SEO considers both! Here are a few ways to incorporate SEO into your TikTok strategy:
- Include descriptive keywords that are popular in your niche. There are five ways to include them:
- In your caption
- As hashtags (use a mix of broad and niche hashtags to increase performance)
- In your video title
- In your closed captions
- With on-screen text
- Verbalize popular keywords in the first few seconds of your video, so TikTok can pick up on these from your closed captions.
- Use the search bar in TikTok to find popular terms for a specific topic by viewing the “You may like” topics, and starting a search to see what suggestions appear.
And with TikTok videos now appearing as results on search engines like Google, there’s never been a better time to incorporate those keywords into your content, so you gain even more reach and visibility!
